How do people feel today about growing their nest egg? Can they trust financial advisors after the severe stock market decline of the past recession and, of course, the actions of Bernie Madoff, the Ponzi-scheme swindler who defrauded investors to the tune of more than $65 billion? Upon reading Mike Silverstein's story, "Investing in the Post-Madoff Era," which begins on page 38, yes, we can fell safe about investing today if we follow some of the advice detailed in the article. Getting to know your financial advisor is a good way to start; there has to be "good personal chemistry" between the advisor and the client. An advisor's credentials and experience are important too, but more importantly, the professional must be aware of the client's goals and changing circumstances.
