Hibernia Atlantic Changes Name to Hibernia Networks

Hibernia Atlantic, a provider of global capacity services, changes its name to Hibernia Networks. The new name reflects the company’s organic and strategic network growth, having evolved from a transatlantic centric provider of high bandwidth connectivity solutions to a provider of global solutions.

With its US location in Summit, Hibernia Networks is comprised of three strategic platforms addressing the bandwidth needs and highly specialized requirements across several key markets -- wholesale, financial and media. As part of the company’s global focus, Hibernia Media will now be fully integrated under the Hibernia Networks platform. The company has grown its global network reach to over 120 points of presence (PoPs) in North America, Ireland, United Kingdom, Europe and the Pacific Rim and operates five Hibernia-owned cable landing stations.

Reflecting on the milestone, Bjarni Thorvardarson, Chief Executive Officer for Hibernia Networks stated, “Hibernia has evolved well beyond its original transatlantic serving area. As Hibernia Networks, our company reflects a unified team offering worldwide network services to a focused, but expanding, customer base.”

Hibernia was founded in 2003 with the purchase of two transatlantic submarine cables and cable landing stations.  The system was built by TE SubCom (formerly Tyco Submarine Systems) at an initial cost of approximately one billion dollars.  Hibernia began carrying traffic across the network in 2005 after establishing backhaul routes to London and New York.  The company has deployed numerous network expansions over recent years including Project Kelvin, a high capacity route into Ireland, new low latency routes into Asia and the acquisition of MediaXtream and Telia Media Connect.
