Atlantic Health System, Chilton Hospital Agree to Merge

Atlantic Health System and Chilton Hospital announce that the board of directors of both health care systems have agreed in principle to merge Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains and affiliated Chilton Health Network sites with Morristown-based Atlantic Health System.

Atlantic Health System, one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in New Jersey, owns and operates Morristown, Overlook, and Newton Medical Centers and the Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown. Chilton Hospital is a member of the Chilton Health Network, which offers health care services and care providers in communities throughout Northwestern New Jersey.

The merger is pending a due diligence phase and is subject to regulatory review but is expected to be finalized by mid-2013.

“Chilton and Atlantic Health System have a long history of working successfully together,” said Dr. Deborah K. Zastocki, President and CEO of Chilton Hospital. “By joining Atlantic Health System, we can assure the local community that we are proactively taking the steps necessary to remain a vital health care resource for years to come. Partnership with Atlantic Health will provide Chilton with the resources to support and strengthen its mission and strategic initiatives. Chilton physicians will also have the opportunity to join the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization (ACO), one of the largest in the nation.”

The decision to merge demonstrates ongoing efforts by Atlantic Health System to expand its nationally recognized programs and services into more communities throughout the region.

“The health care landscape in New Jersey and throughout our nation is changing, and we are changing with it,” said Joseph A. Trunfio, Atlantic Health System, CEO. “Atlantic Health System and Chilton have assessed how our hospitals might partner to best serve current and future patients and enhance the health status of the communities we serve. We have concluded a merger is the best option for us to deliver the highest quality care to our patients and region.”

Chilton Hospital joining Atlantic Health System would provide clear benefits to the community and help, in coming years, to advance health care in New Jersey. Several anticipated benefits include:
* Significant clinical and economic efficiencies to lower the cost of health care while providing the highest quality services.
* Expanded outpatient and preventive medicine services within the region.
* Broader patient access to coordinated primary, pediatric and specialty care; clinical trials; and the most immediate access to specialized emergency care, including complex stroke care, the latest cardiac diagnostic and treatment interventions, and advanced neonatal care.
* Expanded access to tertiary care through primary care physicians.
* Shared best practices, evidence-based care and quality assurance activities within and across our medical staffs.
