Ramapo College Students Assess Development

Ramapo College students are helping the local community stay “green.” Students in Professor Michael Edelstein’s Environmental Assessment class prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to determine the ecological, physical and socio-economic impacts of a proposed 750,000-squarefoot shopping center at the intersection between Interstate 287 and Route 17 in Mahwah.

Students examined air pollution, flooding, lights, noise, potential surface water issues, noxious conditions, odors and health and safety considerations. They then presented their findings to the Mahwah Environmental Commission.

By studying three major areas of the proposed plan: social/ economic and policy impacts, ecological impacts and physical impacts, students offered several considerations to the Commission.

A First for FieldView Solutions

FieldView Solutions, Edison, becomes the first company to receive financing through the state’s new Edison Innovation Green Growth Fund (EIGGF).

FieldView Solutions, a provider of data center infrastructure management (DCIM), received a $1-million growth capital loan to advance its energy efficient products in New Jersey.

FieldView is committed to helping data center managers, IT and facilities personnel run their IT environments at peak efficiency. According to the company, its DCIM platform reduces energy consumption by a minimum of 10 percent across the 26 major data centers in New Jersey using FieldView software. As a result, customers have received a 172,000-metric-ton reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. FieldView Solutions expects to create 14 new jobs as a result of the EIGGF award.

According to Fred Dirla, FieldView CEO, “EIGGF is a terrific program, one that not only promotes energy effi ciency, but also has a real impact on job creation.”

“This team has a stellar reputation and high-level practice that expands the scope of services we offer clients in the environmental arena and enhances the depth and breadth of an already prominent practice,” says Patrick C. Dunican Jr., chairman and managing director of Gibbons. “With more than a dozen attorneys, the Gibbons environmental team is well positioned to provide clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic with exceptional, business-oriented solutions.”

The Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business ranks Gibbons as one of the top environmental practices in the state.

Bird-Friendly Wind Power May Bring Flock of Jobs to New Jersey

The blades of traditional wind turbines can kill bats, birds and other flying wildlife. This was a concern to Raymond Green, a World War II veteran and retired welder and operating engineer, so he designed a turbine system that eliminates external blades. His Catching Wind PowerŪ (CWP) Compressed Air Enclosed Wind Turbine will be tested, refined and manufactured by Middlesex-based Sigma Design Company. Sigma and Green are forming an investment team to bring the product to market. Once launched, production is expected to bring some 25 new technology jobs to New Jersey.

The patented “Inner Compression Cone Technology” (ICCT) squeezes the incoming air, compressing it as it is drawn through the turbine and multiplies it, creating more power. The ICCT technology also creates virtually no noise. The blades are internal, closer together and smaller, therefore eliminating the sound traditional blades make as they spin and swoop past the tower.
